Archaeology at The University of Edinburgh

Welcome to Archaeology, part of the School of History, Classics and Archaeology at the University of Edinburgh.

We excel in training archaeologists at both undergraduate and postgraduate level, and offer stimulating courses on a wide range of periods and subjects, including archaeological theory and practice. Edinburgh has a long and distinguished tradition of teaching (undergraduate & postgraduate), research and fieldwork, all of which are closely integrated.

We specialize in the study of:

  • prehistory
  • early civilizations
  • classical archaeology
  • Byzantine archaeology
  • bioarchaeology
  • experimental archaeology
  • underwater archaeology

and have regional expertise in:

  • Scotland
  • Europe
  • Mediterranean
  • Near East

Our teaching and research activities benefit from strong links with the National Museums of Scotland and the Scottish Universities Environmental Research Centre.
