Archaeology is a multi-faceted and wide-ranging discipline. In Edinburgh, we have a long tradition of research and expertise in several areas, notably in European prehistory, and the early civilizations of the Mediterranean and the Middle East. The undergraduate curriculum encompasses a wide range of subject/period themes, methodological and theoretical approaches, whilst also encouraging practical experience, excavation and fieldwork.
Students are admitted to read degrees in Archaeology through the College of Humanities and Social Science. We offer a choice of three single honours degrees, as well as joint honours degrees that combine Archaeology with one other discipline. Archaeology courses may also be taken as part of an ordinary degree.
Our single honours degrees are:

Students reading for honours degrees complete four years of study. During each of the first two years, students take 120-credits' worth of courses — this may consist of three full courses, or 6 half-courses, or a combination of whole and half-courses. Normally, two of the subjects studied in the first year are also taken in the second year. At the end of second year, Archaeology students are considered for entry into honours. The Archaeology honours programme is spread over two years and consists of a combination of core courses, option courses and independent study for the dissertation.
All our degrees have built-in choice and flexibility. You can choose many of your courses to meet your aspirations and interests. You will also choose your final-year dissertation topic in consultation with a member of staff. In addition, all our degrees provide opportunities for acquiring practical skills in the field and laboratory.
