Roman statues Classics has a long and august history at Edinburgh University, and recent appointments have revitalised this important discipline. In Classics you can have the opportunity to study the cultures of the ancient world with a distinguished and dedicated staff of international experts. Innovative research-led courses will reveal new vistas onto the rich world of antiquity.

Classics at The University of Edinburgh

Welcome to Classics in Edinburgh, "the Athens of the North". We are a strong and energetic team of fourteen permanent, full-time academic staff located within the School of History, Classics and Archaeology. Our teaching and research interests range from the cultures, literatures and histories of ancient Greece, Italy, and the Near East to the archaeology of Roman Britain, the Athenian acropolis and late antique Rome - to name but a few.

At Edinburgh you can study all aspects of traditional and modern Classics, at both undergraduate and graduate levels, including Greek and Latin language and literature, ancient history as well as classical art and archaeology. Classics at Edinburgh continues its long and proud tradition of offering the widest choice of subjects and approaches in Classics of any university in Scotland.

We are a dedicated teaching team and proud of our students' recognition of our efforts in both lecture theatre and classroom.

In the first ever EUSA Teaching Awards (2009), Classics was voted BEST DEPARTMENT by the student body. Individual runner-up awards also went to Dr Lloyd Llewellyn-Jones (Best Dissertation Supervisor) and Dr Michael Lurie (Best Teacher of Employable Skills). All in Classics are proud and delighted with the results and thank the students for their support and initiative. For details click here. What did they say? Click here to find out.

But at Edinburgh, students can also benefit from a lively programme of Study Abroad, as well as staff-led study trips. Recents visits have included Tunisia, Athens, and Iran.
