The hall-mark of the historically minded person is an itch for the concrete, a desire to get behind generalizations to the facts upon which they are based and to establish an almost physical relationship with the texture of earlier times. To those who contemplate enlarging their experience through historical study I can promise a deepening sense of the reasonableness of the human past and thus modest confidence in the future .
Denys Hay, former Professor of Medieval History at the University of Edinburgh
