Welcome to History at Edinburgh. We are a group of over thirty permanent, full-time academic staff based in the School of History, Classics and Archaeology, making us one of the largest History units in the country. History at Edinburgh was recently ranked among the top ten History departments in the UK.
Our research interests are extremely wide ranging, and include the study of medieval culture, religion, gender, and law; historical theory; early modern witchcraft and the occult; the Italian Renaissance; North America in the colonial and post-colonial eras; intellectual history from Machiavelli to Marx; genocide; Nazi and post-war Germany; the Cold War; and political, social, and cultural aspects of the history of China, Japan, India, and Australia in the modern era.
