I am a temporary lecturer in British History here at Edinburgh, having previously taught and studied at the University of Oxford. My research focuses on regional identities and popular protest in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. I am particularly interested in the north of England, and in the Luddites. I take an interdisciplinary approach, using cultural geography and historical sociology alongside more traditional ways of looking at popular politics.
I teach the pre-honours course in modern British History, and two honours courses: Britain during the Napoleonic Wars, and Collective Action and Popular Protest, c.1760-1848.
