School of History, Classics and Archaeology Relocation to West Wing - Old Medical Building
The Project
The University has awarded a budget
of £14 million to the West Wing development
project and the Carnegie Trust has awarded
£45,000 to the School for the restoration
and display of some of the stunning pieces
from the Classics
cast collection. Following tender processes,
Edinburgh-based architects McLaren,
Murdoch and Hamilton won the design
contract and Mansell
Construction were awarded the main construction
contract.
The project consists of the refurbishment
of seven floors of the Medical Buildings.
The interior of the building is being sympathetically
restored and the original features, including
cornices, panel doors and architraves, restored
and retained as far as possible. Many of
the rooms on the top floor will retain the
spectacular sky lights, with new glass panelling.
The completed premises will provide:
Two large postgraduate study rooms
Large study/reading/research rooms for
UG/PG students and staff
Archaeology labs and teaching facilities
Academic and support staff offices
Space for Fellows and visitors
Several seminar, tutorial and meeting
rooms
Computer based teaching facilties
Social space
Display and exhibition areas to include
the Classics cast collection
An Undergraduate Teaching Office
A wireless enabled environment throughout
the whole building
College postgraduate rooms on the top
floor
proximity to a newly refurbished and
state of the art equipped Teviot Lecture
Theatre and the Meadows Lecture Theatre
on the Ground Floor of the building.
