Dumbarton Rock

With the establishment of the Sir William Fraser Chair of Scottish History and Palaeography in 1901, Edinburgh became the first university to teach Scottish history as an academic subject. Today, Scottish History at Edinburgh is at the forefront of the discipline. Students here have an ideal opportunity to study the history of the country in which they are based.

Scottish History at The University of Edinburgh

Welcome to Scottish History, one of the five subject areas of the School of History, Classics and Archaeology. Here in the nation’s capital, Scottish history is taught by a strong and distinguished team of academic staff.

Scottish History has been taught at the University of Edinburgh ever since the prestigious Fraser Chair of Scottish History was established in 1901. The current Professor is Tom Devine. The subject area has seven core members of staff, plus a number of postdoctoral fellows and associated staff. Their expertise ranges very widely: from the early medieval period to the present day; from saints to witches; from the Highlands to Scotland’s overseas connections; and from the Picts to the founding of the new Scottish Parliament.

Comprehensive coverage

Our undergraduate programmes cover everything from the early middle ages to the present day. The honours degree in Scottish History can be taken on its own or in various combinations (including the popular MA in History and Scottish History).

Scottish History is particularly strong at postgraduate level, with all the academic staff supervising numerous PhD students. Its MSc programmes are flourishing, and there is a lively postgraduate community.

All the academic staff are active researchers, with many books and articles to their credit.
