Honorary Postdoctoral Fellows

Scottish History has a number of Honorary Postdoctoral Fellows, who are active in aspects of the work of the School and contribute to its research culture. At present these are:

Dr Sharon Adams

She is the author of 'A Regional Road to Revolution: Religion, Politics and Society in South-West Scotland, 1600-1650' (University of Edinburgh PhD thesis, 2002), and of several articles. From 2002 to 2007 she was Publication Secretary of the Scottish History Society.

Dr Aaron Allen

He is the author of The Locksmith Craft in Early Modern Edinburgh (Edinburgh: Society of Antiquaries of Scotland, 2007).

Dr David Dobson

He is the author of Scottish Emigration to Colonial America, 1607-1785 (Athens, Geo., 1994) and many additional volumes of data on Scottish emigration overseas in the early modern period. His PhD was awarded by the University of Aberdeen in 2005.

Dr Eric Graham

His publications include A Maritime History of Scotland, 1650-1790 (East Linton, 2002), Seawolves: Pirates and the Scots (Edinburgh, 2005), and Clyde Built: Blockade Runners, Cruisers and Armoured Rams of the American Civil War (Edinburgh, 2006).

Dr Anna Groundwater

She is the author of 'The Scottish Middle March, 1573 to 1625: power, kinship, allegiance' (Royal Historical Society, Boydell, 2010). She is currently a research Fellow in the AHRC project on Ben Jonson's Voyage to Scotland, in the English Literature department at the University of Edinburgh.

Dr John MacAskill

He is author of '"The most arbitrary, scandalous act of tyranny": the crown, private proprietors and the ownership of the Scottish foreshore in the ninteenth century', Scottish Historical Review, 85 (2006).

Dr Neil MacGillivray

He is the author of 'Food, Poverty and Epidemic Disease: Edinburgh, 1840-1850' (University of Edinburgh PhD thesis, 2004).

Dr George McGilvary

He is author of Guardian of the East India Company: the Life of Laurence Sulivan (London, 2006) and of a forthcoming study of the Scots in the East India Company.

Dr Martin Rorke

He is the author of 'Scottish Overseas Trade, 1275/86-1597' (University of Edinburgh PhD thesis, 2001), and of several articles. He has recently been a researcher for the Scottish Burgh Survey.

Dr Allen Simpson

He is the co-author (with R. D. Connor) of Weights and Measures in Scotland: a European Perspective (Edinburgh, 2004).

Dr Scott Spurlock

He has recently lectured in History at the University of Aberdeen, and is the author of Cromwell and Scotland: Conquest and Religion, 1650-1660 (Edinburgh, 2007).

Dr Jill Turnbull

She is author of The Scottish Glass Industry, 1610-1750 (Edinburgh, 2001), published in the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland monograph series.

Dr Douglas Watt

He is a former postdoctoral fellow in Scottish History funded by the Stewart Ivory foundation, and author of The Price of Scotland: Darien, Union and the Wealth of Nations (Edinburgh, 2007) and related articles.

Dr John R. Watts

He is author of Scalan: the Forbidden College, 1716-1799 (East Linton, 1999) and of several articles.

Rev. Dr Iain Whyte

He is former chaplain of the University of Edinburgh and author of Scotland and the Abolition of Black Slavery, 1756-1838 (Edinburgh, 2006).
