Welcome CH opened the meeting, and provided brief overview of format. 2. Books/Ejournals/Articles Request for more online articles to be accessible. CH highlighted use of bibliography searches. E-journals showing as unavailable without purchase, despite appearing on reading list. GS highlighted that this may be a server issue. Action: students to contact CH with specific E-Journal info Difficulties in accessing books in some instances only 1 copy of each book from reading list is available, so in high demand. It was suggested chapters be posted on WebCT for those books. Action: Reps to gather specific book suggestions from groups to feed back to CH, as there may be budget to obtain additional copies of high demand titles. Online sources/Reading list can be off-topic to tutorial question Action: Rep to send details of instances to CH Suggestion of specifying book chapters within the reading list titles. The point was made that at this stage in the course, students should be developing skills for skim reading texts to discern relevant information, and that providing too much direction is not conducive to success in future workplace. It was suggested that students could find it useful to check introductions/chapter info when trying to decide how to tackle a text. It was agreed, however, that students have varying approaches to course material, with some naturally inclined to attempt to read a book in its entirety. 3. Tutorials/Lectures Many people signed up to same tutorial slot in 2nd semester, so groups can be composed of many of the same students. As a result, new students struggle with references to previous semester tutorial information. There was, however, a feeling that general background texts were very useful for catching up. Would prefer if tutorials matched up with lectures in terms of topics. It was noted, however, that this could have knock-on effect on book availability, if all tutorials followed same schedule of topics. Students found the change in tutorials over the two semesters quite disruptive. Concern over how much lecture time dedicated to exam revision. Extra revision sessions, outside tutorial time, to be offered, and a sample exam paper would be provided. Structure of tutorial groups varying It was highlighted that tutorial style will vary naturally from tutor to tutor, so this issue remains unresolved so far. However, CH asked if the presentation element of tutorials was felt to be useful? Feedback was positive, with comment made that it allowed for more focused preparation in advance of essay, and encouraged knowledge on multiple questions. It was still preferred that some form of standardisation by implemented. The use of debate element within tutorials was discussed. It was recommended that tutorial groups negotiate structure with tutors at start of semester. Could lecture slides be uploaded to WebCT in advance of lectures, to allow students to prepare/do background research, and to allow students to listen more in lectures as opposed to frantically taking notes? It was argued that putting slides up in advance of lectures could have more of an adverse effect on attendance levels, than the current practice of posting notes after lectures. It was agreed that a potential compromise could be to provide handouts during each lecture, as already happens in some instances. Action: CH to approach lecturers to discuss providing handouts in lectures. 4. Handbooks It was felt that the hard copy of the handbook was missed this semester, particularly in terms of allowing students to easily check tutorial topic schedule. It was agreed that having the tutorial menu was the most relevant bit if cost management/paper wastage was a concern. The suggestion was made of perhaps having the essay question list at the rear, with tutorial menu to the fore, with something inserted between to make a clear distinction. 5. General feedback from students: It was felt there was a marked improvement from the previous semester, with issues raised at last staff/student meeting being addressed. Students provided positive feedback regarding the variety of essay topics in the current semester. 6. AOB: CH asked students if the thematic approach was felt to be working this semester. Feedback was generally positive, with students making comparison to semester 1, when some students had felt they couldnt get a grasp on the basics because the themes meant flitting around too much from region to region.
