Students: Karl Hope, Emma Rae, Allison McCormack, Maya Hoole, Billy MacRae, Welcome. Remit of committee and appointment of minute secretary. The function and procedure of the committee was explained to all present and Billy MacRae was appointed SSLC minute secretary. Archaeology Communications. Archaeology has instituted a system for providing feedback on exams, whereby exam scripts are made available with staff present to provide further information if required. It was noted that few students made use of this facility, but it is intended to continue. Students are to be encouraged to take up this opportunity for both marker feedback and clarity of students own performance in the exam. Honours options for the next 2 years are being finalised and students are encouraged to speak to individual members of staff about their courses, should they wish to clarify any matters regarding course content. Notice was given about the creation of a School level SSLC. Details are yet to be decided but Archaeology is projected to have 1 or 2 representatives in meetings which will combine members from all three subject areas. The remit has not yet been announced but issues to be debated are likely to concern the whole School, rather than individual subjects. Archaeology is scheduled to move location in Aug 2010 to the west wing of the old Medical Building on Lauriston Place. Student concerns with the lack of Common room facilities were noted. 'Cluster areas' have been proposed for the new building and Archaeology may have the opportunity to theme certain areas to retain a sense of identity. Group teaching space should be an improvement on the current situation, with all lectures and tutorials being delivered within the same building. It was noted that there has been considerable outlay on new laboratory facilities although the illustration facilities may be less good. As with most changes there will be some winners and some losers. The reason for the move has been explained as part of the consolidation of the new School of History, Classics and Archaeology. It was felt that Archaeology fitted better within the new grouping than the previous group of Music, Architecture and History of Art. History and Classics were already scheduled to move location as part of the Universities plan for upgrading its building stock. The Old High School is scheduled to be redeveloped as part of a new environmental centre in conjunction with Heriot-Watt University. It was intimated that a new lecturer in Forensic Anthropology has been appointed. She will be primarily involved in delivering the MSc in Forensic Anthropology, but has also shown interest in delivering some teaching on the undergraduate level. This will principally affect future students, though first and second year students may find input from this new appointee. The results of the Teaching Programme Review at the end of last year were very positive for Archaeology, with the highest number of commendations within the school. The contribution of students to the TPR review board was acknowledged and this positive outcome should improve the standing of the department within the new School system. The University recognises the need for appointing a new Abercromby professor. The commitment however is in principle and many factors have to be taken into consideration before the next appointment can be made. Student representatives on UG Studies Committee and UG Board of Studies. Archaeology is looking for student representatives for the Undergraduate Studies Committee. This committee deals with issues such as marking, feedback, course delivery, and any issues which are of broad concern across the whole School. Archaeology is also looking for student representatives for the Undergraduate Board of Studies. This is a more administrative body which deals with quality assurance and the formation of the course. Representations are made to this body from Governors, Senatus Academicus, students etc. and deals with the logistics of the department, rather than day-to-day running of the courses. First Year Student Comments. No representations had been made to the representative. Staff urged the representatives who were present that if any subsequent issues were raised about the course, they should try to gain a consensus of opinion rather than follow up specific issues on individual students. Second year student comments. No representations had been made to the representatives. Staff would like to hear feedback from second year students as this is a new course. A questionnaire is being assembled for delivery to students by the end of the academic year. It was noted that some students on second year only study one semester of the course and this was particularly true for visiting students. Staff would also like to get feedback from these students either through representatives or in person after lectures. Third year student comments. The issue of exams being timetabled in the summer rather than at the end of each semester was raised. This is a historical issue which is not within the remit of Archaeology to decide. Summer timetabling of exams is common throughout the School. Exam timetabling is also an issue relating to semesterisation, which is currently under way. There are no immediate plans for changes to the current system, though long term proposals may affect timetabling in the future. This issue also concerns EUSA and Archaeology students are urged to inform themselves about EUSA activity and representation. Student feeling on the current seminar system was positive and encouraged group discussions. While some topics lent themselves well to group discussions some students felt others could benefit from readings being accompanied by a few remarks or questions to refine the angle of enquiry. Staff response was that this was a new system being trialled and was functioning well, with smaller groups of students talking amongst themselves appearing to be more conducive to debate than previous system. Specific issues about content and format of delivery could be brought up with course convener at a later date. Fourth year student comments. No comments. Date of next meeting. It was decided that mid semester was most suitable and a date towards the middle or end of February would be scheduled.
