Reading: The situation regarding access to reading material seems to have improved. Student reps reported that there was still considerable pressure on available library resources around essay deadlines. Dr Pentland spoke about Margaret Forrest’s recent work in terms of making material available on e-reserve and ensuring that reading on essay lists was available in the HUB collection. He also undertook to encourage lecturers to revise reading lists for essays with a view to including more electronically-available material. 2. Library Training: Training sessions during Freshers’ Week seem to have had a disappointingly low take up. Dr Pentland explained that he had discussed this issue with Margaret Forrest, who had placed guidance on library use on the WebCT site. It was suggested that in the future part of the introductory lecture might be given over to a talk on library use. 3. Assessment: Dr Pentland asked whether Student Reps felt there was any appetite for different types of assessment on the course. Student Reps thought that a tutorial attendance/contribution mark ought to form some part of the assessment – there was even an assumption among the student body that this did form part of the assessment. Other models of assessment (e.g. the Essay Plan, which forms the first assessment in Medieval Scottish History) were discussed as possible models. 4. WebCT: Student reps encouraged lecturing staff to place as much relevant material on WebCT as possible (e.g. lecture slides, handouts), highlighting it as a crucial resource for students on this course. 5.
