Bowd (Chair) Miss F. Bromage, Miss N. Callin, Mr A. Dougal, Mr A. Drennan, Miss A Hobhouse, Miss A. Lacey, Miss R. OBrien, Miss A. Pease, Miss A. Reeves, Miss H. Telling, Miss A. Thomson, Dr S. Cockram, Mr V. Colthurst, Miss T. Cosentino, Miss K. Nicolai, Dr J. Ruiz, Dr K. Varley In attendance: Miss T. Welch 1. Apologies: Apologies were received from: Miss R. Wilson, Dr P. Ahonen, Professor D. Bloxham, Dr V. Karali, Dr D.B. Kaufman 2. Welcome Dr Stephen Bowd welcomed those present, stating that he was encouraged by the high turnout of student reps to the liaison meeting. He also informed those present that out of the approximate 280 students who had signed up to European History 1 this year only 2 or 3 had dropped out. 3. Change in timetable Dr Bowd informed the student reps that for the first time in the history of the course, the lectures had been moved this year from a 09h00 start to a 10h00 start. With a view to future years he asked those present whether they would prefer to remain in the 10h00 slot, so that he could feed this information back. The meeting unanimously agreed that the 10h00 slot meant students were more receptive and responsive in tutorials (especially those which began immediately after the lecture) and although the change in time created a clash with certain courses, the enrolment on these courses had not been affected and reverting to the 09h00 slot would also entail a clash with other classes. 4. Library Issues Dr Bowd reported that he had been in contact with the Schools librarian, Mrs Margaret Forrest and had provided her with the reading list for semester 2 so that a number of chapters of reading necessary for the assignment would be available on e-reserve. T. Welch is to announce this fact through the Announcements tab on WebCT. He has also notified Margaret that the re-shelving of books is going at a very slow pace. In response to student comment, Dr Bowd stated that he would look into ordering further hard copies of certain texts, but highlighted the fact that he would need to see whats left in the budget. 5. Feedback by Student Reps: Source Commentaries One student rep had received a report of student concern over what was required within the Source Commentary. Other reps present spoke of how their tutor had prepared them for the writing of a source commentary It appeared that not all tutors had addressed the issue in the same way, but the majority had either presented a sample source commentary, or had provided guidelines from the Higher Education Association. It was agreed that the best practice was when tutors provided a source commentary incorporating the time frame that the students had studied either that week or the week previous in their lectures. Essay Preparation In the case of essay preparation, some students felt that a practice essay would have been useful. (This method is implemented in the Politics Department.) It was agreed that the following would be implemented: Guidelines from the Higher Education Association uploaded onto WebCT Tutorial Readings and e-Reserve links uploaded onto WebCT The Discussion facility on WebCT should be enabled so that students can interact online. This would also recognise and address the issue of students who have taken a year out or have not studied History at Higher / A level prior to coming to the University. Time Management In response to some student concern about essays having to be submitted on the same day, staff pointed out that most submission dates would entail some sort of clash and suggested that good planning and time management by the student would alleviate such concerns. Tutorial content and lecture content Dr Bowd informed the meeting that he would address the issue of tutorial content falling chronologically behind the content of lectures. In response to a query as to why lectures about the Renaissance preceded those of the Reformation Dr Bowd informed those present that it was due to staff commitments, but recognised that this may have caused a little confusion for some. 6. AOB No further business was put forward. 7.
