Apologies Apologies were received from Dr Felix Boecking and David Wager. 2. Minutes from last meeting The minutes of the last committee meeting (Friday 18th March 2008) were previously circulated and approved. 3. Matters arising Availability of Reading E-Reserve was reported to be a success in improving the accessibility and availability of reading. Economic History 2 This has now reverted from two to three lectures per week. Asia Africa 2/Social History 2 No action had yet been taken to resolve the clash between Asia and Africa 2 and Social History 2. This matter would be reconsidered ahead of the next academic session. 4. Reports on exams - changes to pass requirements Dr Chick explained to the committee the changes to pre-honours course pass requirements that take effect this year; students are no longer required to pass the course exam in order to pass the course. It is sufficient to submit all of the coursework, maintain a satisfactory attendance at tutorials and obtain an overall pass mark for the course. This change had been made in response to criticism from both external examiners that our pass requirements were too severe. There was a mixed reaction from the students to the change. 5. Class prizes Dr Chick reported that last year two class prizes of a 25 book token had been awarded in the course The British Economy since 1900. This continued the tradition of awarding a Class Medal, plastic replicas of which had long since been exhausted. However, a student on one of the course modules had asked why the full-year course had been privileged in this way. Dr. Chick therefore invited students views as to whether in all pre-Honours courses the leading student should be identified at the end of the year. There was general support for this idea, although Dr. Chick did inform students that the practice of issuing book token to these students would not be continued. The topic would be brought to the forthcoming Subject Area meeting. 6. Teaching Programme Review Dr Chick thanked all the students who participated in the Schools recent Teaching Programme review. He advised that the next steps would be taken following receipt of the teams report on their findings, but that one of their observations concerned the differing practices(e.g. deducting marks for non-attendance at tutorials) within the histories. One of the new initiatives launched by the School had been the introduction of a standardized Honours coursework feedback form and the regularization of procedures for the anonymous submission and marking of work. Dr Chick would welcome feedback from student reps on these and other changes at the next meeting. 7. Pre Honours Courses Social History 1 The representatives present noted that they had both positive and negative feedback to report. Generally, all the students were happy with the way the course was running. It was felt that the link between lectures and tutorials enhanced learning, and that e-Reserve was a great tool in providing for providing a variety of readings. The handouts were also felt to be very useful. Some problems were reported in accessing the Declaration of Own Work form from the School website. The issue of not all students participating in tutorials was also raised. It was also felt that students would like the opportunity of working on a bigger project, such as those undertaken in Business and Economics. Some also thought that it would be beneficial for Essay performance if their short assignment could be returned sooner. It was also reported that some students were experiencing difficulties in accessing some e-journals and in using the library. Dr Stana Nenadic, Social History 1 course organizer, thanked the student representatives for their feedback. The Declaration of Own Work form was noted as being an issue and it was agreed that this would be posted onto WebCT instead of the link to the School website as soon as possible. There was general discussion about the difficulties in addressing participation in tutorials Dr Nenadic highlighted that she was open to suggestions on how to improve this. Dr Nenadic also noted that she was in the process of investigating the possibility of bigger projects. She also asked that if there were particular problems in accessing any of the texts that she was informed as soon as possible. The issue of the earlier return of coursework was noted, however Dr Nenadic explained that this was difficult due to the monitoring process for marking. Social History 2 The student representatives reported it was felt that this was an excellent course with a coherent structure. The different tutors used for tutorials were also reported on favourably. It was also felt it would be helpful if some lecturers could provide powerpoint presentations for notes e.g. for the use of pictures. The use of different types of assessment methods e.g. group work and tutorial participation assessment, was also suggested. Prof Bob Morris, course organizer, thanked the representatives for their feedback. He explained that the course was to change a lot following his retirement next year, and that these issues would be considered during these changes. He also asked that any specific problems in accessing reading be reported to him as soon as possible. Economic History 2 The student representative reported that students generally were really enjoying the course, and particularly the use of different lecturers. There was general agreement that the structure of tutorials in weeks 1-6, where structured questions were answered and specific reading prescribed, increased participation and learning. It was also reported that there were no lecture readings for the current part of the course (these have now been circulated to students and put on WebCT), but that it was useful to have these before the lectures. There was some discussion about the use of different tutors; it was felt that changing tutors made it hard to have personal contact with them and made it feel like a lecture type learning experience, but allowed the best use of their knowledge areas. 8. Honours Courses Energy, Environment and Security No student representative was present.(Apologies and a class rep report were subsequently received) Heritage in Britain since c.1750 The student representative reported that students liked this course and was given positive feedback from all students. Although it was a big class, the way in which students were split between two groups aided participation. It was thought that the field trips were fun. There was some discussion about whether practice in writing exam answers was possible, as it was generally felt that students exam grades were lower than their essay grades. Dr Chick explained that students are able to look at exam scripts (although they cannot take them away from the office) and see the comments and individual question marks that markers provide. He also explained that for students taking Economic and Social History degrees, 3rd year students are given the opportunity for individual feedback sessions on all their examinations. History in Practice Although no specific student representative was appointed, those taking their course gave positive feedback and reported no problems or concerns with the course. History in Theory Again, although no specific student representative was appointed, those taking this course reported some concerns. It was generally felt that this course would have been of greater benefit to students if taken in second year. There were also concerns expressed about the inability to write exam questions on the Pathways that were taken, as many students had picked their Pathways based on their favourite and more knowledgeable subject areas. It was also felt that it was difficult to write essay topics on large concepts, and that there should be more time between the final Pathway and submission of the essay. Students also expressed concern that the course counted for too many credits, and some were worried about the effects that poor exam performance would have on degree classification. Dr Louise Jackson observed that if students were generally found to be performing less well in this exam than throughout their other courses, then this would be noted and responded to. Dr Chick also noted that he would pass the comments received onto Prof Tom Devine, course organizer. (After the meeting, Dr Chick spoke with Prof Devine who thanked all for their comments. Professor Devine said that he would wait until the course questionnaires had been submitted in December and that, together with Dr. Thomas Ahnert (semester 2, course organiser) he would consider the points raised by the students. Scope did exist for rescheduling the reading weeks in Semester 1 of next years course, but the larger questions of the year in which the course was taught and the balance between pathways and exam questions would require a considered discussion in the light of the wider response reported in the class questionnaires.) Society and Culture The student representative reported very positive feedback from the students on this course. One slight concern which was raised by some of the students was that on occasion, they find it difficult to get through all the discussion topics in the discussion group. It was suggested that it might be more beneficial to change the class structure to a one hour lecture and a two hour discussion group. Dr Adam Fox, course organizer, thanked the representative for their feedback. He stated that although the class structure had not been previously reported as causing concerns, this would be taken on board. The British Empire The student representative stated that he felt this to be a much needed addition to the Schools courses offered, and it had received generally positive feedback. It was noted that often wide topic areas were defined for presentations and discussions, and whether it may be useful to allocate separate discussion areas/geographical areas. Tutorial participation was also discussed, particularly in relation to students who did not attend class when it was their turn to give a presentation. Dr Esther Breitenbach thanked the representative for his comments. She noted she was pleased with the high quality of the presentations, and would consider the other issues raised. The US Economy No student representative was present. Youth and Modernity The student representative reported very positive comments from their class; noting that all the students were enjoying the course, and were finding WebCT and study units particularly helpful. No problems or concerns were raised. 9. AOB No other business was reported. 10. Date of next meeting This would be circulated at the beginning of next semester. Dr Chick thanked everyone for their contributions and concluded the meeting. ,HIuw 1 3 4 M N T g n p q ˴}h8xB* OJQJph Ph8xOJQJh|gh8xOJQJhh8xH*h|gh8x>*h|gh8x5h8xh>h8x5mH sH h7h8xhh8x5hh8x5H*hM^h8x5h7h8x5CJmH sH hM^h8x5mH sH -,HIk=[&l$a$gd8x $da$gd8x$da$5 ( Q w x y z 0 1 N R S g &dPgd8x m n 3kl{YVW~0^gd8xFe3Nr ABUlC\g( ) !!!$"7"9"Z"""""$$*%E%o%%%%%$&8&&&&('(T(s(y))*5*b*v***u+---A0h|gh8xH*OJQJh|gh8x>*OJQJh8xOJQJh|gh8xOJQJh|gh8x5OJQJO;|F !!"""$"7"8"Z""""Z###^gd8x#$$"&#&8&&&&f''(a)***<+=+---4..m/n/?0@0T00^gd8xA0T033?3S3?4G4i44555h8xh8xB* OJQJph Ph|gh8x5OJQJh|gh8xOJQJh|gh8x>*OJQJ 01I2J2333<3>3S34>4?4G4h4i44445555":p8x|.
