Apologies Apologies were received from Caroline Paterson, Social History 2 representative, and Prof Richard Rodger. 2. Minutes from last meeting The minutes of the last committee meeting (Friday 18th March 2008) were previously circulated to all. Dr Griffiths highlighted that Item 5, sentence 2 should read “The British Economy since 1500”. This change was noted. The minutes were then approved as a true and accurate record of the meeting. 3. Matters arising There were no matters arising reported from the committee. 4. Pre-Honours Courses Social History 1 The representative present noted that the main concern experienced by students was the lack of reading material for tutorials, with the information not being available on WebCT as in Semester One. The course handbook for Semester Two was also felt not to be as clear on the relationship between tutorials and lectures as in Semester One. The question was also raised that if a student was unable to attend a tutorial, how they were to go about receiving the handout for the next tutorial so that they could prepare. Students asked if they would be able to have five-minute feedback sessions with their tutors on their assignments, as was done last semester, and whether this would also be possible with their essays. It was also felt by some that there was insufficient reading material for the essays available in the library. Generally, students were positive about the way that the course was running, enjoying the lectures and classes, and finding the content and course structure interesting. Dr Griffiths thanked the representative for his helpful comments. He noted that, as it was felt that eReserve had been particularly useful for students in Semester One, steps would be taken to ensure that this was utilized and available next year. This had not been possible this year largely due to the fact that Dr Griffiths had been on leave in Semester One of this year. Steps would also be taken next year to ensure more coherent relationships between lectures and tutorials, and that handout information would be available on WebCT. He also stated that the essays would be handed back personally to students with time for feedback as last semester. Dr Griffiths also noted that all the books on the reading list are available on the HUB Reserve section in the library – should there be any continuing problems in accessing material, he asked that he be informed as soon as possible. Economic History 2 The representative reported that students were enjoying the course, and were happy with the very wide range of subject matter, and felt they were benefiting from the different lecturers and tutors who were involved. It was also reported that students thought that the one-to-one feedback on submissions was great, and had gained experience from researching the short assignment on Maddison data. It was felt that being provided with the essay questions at the start of the semester would be more beneficial to planning reading. Students also asked if more information on tutorials could be put on WebCT in advance of the lectures and tutorials: it was felt that this would aid tutorial preparation as well as ease the transition between different lecturers/tutors with different teaching styles. There was also a request for more assessments to be given to students i.e. one per week. Students also felt that there could be more linkage between lectures and tutorials, for example there were no tutorials on the European section as taken by Prof Richard Rodger. Prof David Greasley, course organizer, thanked the representative for her comments. It was noted that although the essay list was distributed in week 3, this could be given out at the start of semester should that be beneficial for students. There was some general discussion about the number of assessments that was feasible in terms of marking and also for student workload. Prof Greasley highlighted that students were openly encouraged to talk about their coursework both before and after submission for advice and feedback. It was also noted that more information would be available on WebCT next year, and representatives requested that the names of people and places be included on Powerpoint slides as well as featured on lecture handouts. Prof Greasley noted the comments about the lecture/tutorial linkage, and explained that this was difficult to achieve given the wide content of the course, and the ratio of three lectures to one tutorial per week. British Economic and Environmental History The student representative reported that students were enjoying this new course, and thought that the Essay surgery which was to be held was a good idea and would be greatly beneficial. It was suggested that some students who were on the pathway with Social History 1.1 did not find that the content of this particularly relevant to the British Economic and Environmental History course. Dr Martin Chick, course organizer, thanked the representative for his feedback. He explained that the possibility of moving the course to Semester One was being considered. Social History 2 The Social History 2 representative reported that students were generally very positive, finding it to be an interesting and good course. A few students had reported not understanding the links between some of the subject areas, for example, the Colonial City. Some had also reported difficulty in accessing some of the reading materials, with few articles available online. It was also noted that, while providing a great depth in knowledge range, the use of a number of tutors for tutorial groups left some students unsure of who to seek advice from about coursework. Course organizer, Prof Bob Morris, thanked the representative for his comments. He explained that the jumping felt by students between some of the subject areas was because Social History 2 was a theory driven course, unlike many other History courses which are delivered and organized around geographical locations and chronology. Prof Morris stated that he would ensure that this was re-emphasised in class. With regards to who to contact about coursework, Prof Morris advised that anyone could be approached, but if in doubt, they could talk to him directly. He stated that he would also reiterate this to the class, and raise awareness of tutor office hours. Prof Morris explained that much of the reading was available in the ESH Resources Room 109 of the William Robertson Building – as students can borrow materials from here it was asked that if anything was missing, or students were having problems accessing particular reading, to inform either himself or Judith McAllister as soon as possible to ensure that alternatives could be made available. 5. Honours Courses Tradition and Transformation in the Chinese Economy This item was brought forward to allow course organizer, Dr Felix Boecking, to depart from the meeting to attend a post-application visit day. No student representative was present. Belfast 1780 – 1914: Governance, Conflict and Civil Society The student representative reported that students were enjoying the course, and were impressed with the course layout, as well as the use of a lecture and tutorial session each week. It was felt that benefit could be gained from having the lecture and the corresponding tutorial in the same week, rather than the following week. Some students were reporting difficulty in accessing the Parliamentary papers. The representative also reported that she felt History in Practice had helped in this course. Prof Morris, course organizer, thanked the representative for her comments. He noted that, although there were benefits in holding tutorials and lectures in the same week, it was felt that this also enhanced the learning process by increasing thinking time between the two. It was agreed that the online system available was not a good substitute for accessing the Parliamentary papers, and that action should be taken to establish a suitable alternative. Energy, Environment and Security The representative reported that generally, everyone was enjoying the course, and the way that it is structured with the use of student presentations. It was noted that the class size in Semester Two is considerably bigger than in Semester One, but this was felt not to be a problem. The essay deadline was also reported as being well-coordinated with the Dissertation deadline. It was requested that it would be useful if the graphs which were used in class on the board could be made available on WebCT, as well as a summary of the add-ins that Dr Chick gave in class. While the students also found it helpful that the presentations given were then made available on WebCT, there was some concern over whether there may be errors in these. Dr Chick thanked the representative for her comments. He noted that summaries of each week’s classes would be made available on WebCT following the essay submission date. He also stated that he was in the process of going through the Powerpoint presentations to check for any errors, but advised against students using these as their primary source of revision for the exam. History in Practice Although no specific History in Practice representative had been appointed, Dr Griffiths welcomed comments from those present who were taking the course. One student noted that they felt students were generally enjoying the course, and greatly benefiting from the relationship of the projects to courses that were being undertaken. She said that she felt that students who had picked a project which corresponded with their Semester Two courses were benefiting more than those who had picked a project which was related to a course taken in Semester One. Dr Gayle Davis, acting course organizer, welcomed the comments, and noted that the relationship between projects and courses taken was to continue. All students would also be given the opportunity to give feedback on the course. New Zealand and the World Economy No representative could be selected from this course. Refinement and Rakishness The student representative had generally received very positive feedback about the course – everyone was enjoying the content and the structure of the course. The course handbook was particularly noted as being comprehensive, with good reading lists. Good use was also made of WebCT with sources and presentations being available, and it was noted that it was easy to get help with the coursework. It was felt that more books may be useful, and there could be more structured discussions after the presentations. Dr Katharine Glover, course organizer, welcomed the feedback. She noted that the set-up was not as interactive as she had hoped, perhaps due to the numbers on the course. It was also highlighted that as the course organizer, she wished to give the students all the opportunity to ask questions rather than doing so herself. Society and Culture in Britain The student representative reported that everyone was thoroughly enjoying the course and had received much positive feedback – students were enjoying the lectures, course content and found Dr Fox to be approachable as the course organiser. Dr Fox, course organizer, thanked the student for her comments. Society in an Age of ‘Mass’ Leisure The representative reported that everyone was enjoying the course, and found the lectures and handouts to be particularly good. The format of the class, with one lecture and one tutorial session a week, was also found by many to be preferable to other two-hour seminar classes. It was asked if this format could be more widely dispersed across other History courses. Some students also questioned whether the essay questions could be more closely linked with the weekly topics. Dr Griffiths thanked the representative for her comments. He stated that it is possible, as in the handbook, for students to alter their own essay topics after consulting with him. He also noted that too much of an overlap between weekly topics and essay questions is problematic in terms of assessment material, as the exam is primarily used to assess material taught on a weekly basis. British Empire The representative highlighted that the course generated positive feedback in terms of content and course structure, with use of student presentations. It was felt by many that anonymous marking of coursework was not necessary. There were variable opinions on the economics content of the course, some wishing more, others less. It was also suggested that art could be covered as a theme. The representative also asked if non-attendance at classes was penalized. The course organizer, Dr Esther Breitenbach, welcomed the comments. She advised that non-attendance was not penalized, and she would ensure that this was re-emphasised to the class. She particularly thanked the comments about the balance of the course in terms of content, and stated that she would be looking for more feedback on this to determine if this may be modified. 6. AOB There was some discussion surrounding the issue of tutorial attendance, and whether this should be assessed, and if so how. Some of the comments that were raised included whether this could be done on input as well as attendance, or whether use of an exercise assessment method would be beneficial. Dr Griffiths thanked everyone for their contributions and feedback, and concluded the meeting. 7. Date of next meeting The date of the next meeting is to be Wednesday 25th March, at 1pm in Room 333, primarily to discuss feedback from course questionnaires but also any other matters arising. ,HIvxƒ„™š¢¤Ö× Æ ± ŗ ( * + D E z | ģ t v x ‡ Ę Ž ß š w‹ßóåóŻÓŻĖÄóø“Ė¦¦¦“ž“ž“ž“ž–“Ž“†“ž“ž“~“v“q“ h94ß>*hŲlĪh94ß>*hšy²h94ß5h94ßOJQJhŽēh94ßH*hæ|gh94ß>*hæ|gh94ß5 hŲlĪh94ß hŽēh94ßh94ßh“>ąh94ß5mH sH hā7¢h94ßhŽēh94ß5hŲlĪh94ß5H*hžM^h94ß5hā7¢h94ß5CJmH sH hžM^h94ß5mH sH *,HIk„™š¢£¤× 4 R a ‚ ¹ Ż é ż 0 I a ÷÷÷ģģäģäāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāāā$a$gd94ß $d’a$gd94ß$d’a$Bża § ø Ö ’ ? @ A B ¬ » ' ( E s t ˆ Ä Å Ę Ż Ž š ń ŗJĪżżżżżżšżżżżżżżżżżżżżżżżżżżżż &dPĘ’gd94ßĪ?ģķ1j‡uvŠ‹f£³ÄŻ޽—˜ÄŃQSżżżżżżżżżżżżżżżżżżżżżżżżżżżżżß™Å ’&§&Ü&•'—'Ō'¦+Č+>0R0s3•3Ļ3é3C7c78Į88<H<Ÿ?§?Ś@*hšy²h94ß5hšy²h94ß>* hšy²h94ß S ¢ !”!Z"[""ü#ż$&‘&’&„&¦&Ū&Ü&m'•'–'Ó'Ō'(#)s)Ó)Ō)żżżżżżżżżżżżżżżżżżżżżżżżżżżżżŌ)ź*¤+„+Ē+Č+b,ź,L-.¾.æ.m/<0=0R0S0ļ0š0‡2ˆ2q3r3•3–3Ķ3Ī3é3ź34żżżżżżżżżżżżżżżżżżżżżżżżżżżżż4€5õ5ö5?7@7B7b7c7W8Y8š8›8œ8Į8Ā8Ä8G9::«:¬:6<7<G<H<ā<0=Ō=> >żżżżżżżżżżżżżżżżżżżżżżżżżżżżż >f>Ś>?ž?Ÿ?§?Ø?Ų@Ś@;AB#%&()*+B$(3&.ĶŌŃŁIQ‹ĆĖčėģļšõēń•œ''·'L0U0A6L6Į6Ė6 :ŠŅčė/2 :3333å94ß’@€77Ōiø 77:`@’’Unknown’’’’’’’’’’’’G‡z €’Times New Roman5€Symbol3& ‡z €’ArialkMTimesNewRomanPSMTTimes New Roman 1ˆšŠhöKÓ&öKÓ&©^1i©^1i€š„Ą““€24dź9ź952ƒqšPš’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’WM+2’’+School of History, Classics and Archaeology helo woldKatherine Christiež’ą…ŸņłOh«‘+'³Ł0č~˜ĢŲģų $0 P \ ht|„Œ”ä,School of History, Classics and Archaeology helo woldNormalKatherine Christie2Microsoft Office Word@źVś@\CĻ É@\CĻ É©^1GL}’’’’žQtć –>&" WMFCF $9$Yl^iżQt EMF$Y:˜žŹ #Ėf ^i% € Rpœ’’’¼@Times New RomanG‡z €’Times ew RomanXŹ 0į @ēņ“0ēlNÆ0(ēdv% TPLY ½_̇@?@‡@Ø+L^i¤School of History, Classics and Archaeology8,8222"M'!2,2H2'','288H,,82,2222TTZ L ½_̇@?@‡@Z ØL^iP 6 Rp‹’’’¼@Times New RomanG‡z €’Times ew Romanź ēĢĮ— źēņ“0ēlNÆ0(ēdv% TšŻ” %_̇@?@‡@Ż L^i„Economic and Social HistoryN4;@;`!4;AA@;3!:![ .&;3;TT€ ”½ %_̇@?@‡@€ L^iP > % TTÆ ä …_̇@?@‡@Æ pL^iP 6 TpĢx³é_̇@?@‡@ĢŌL^iXStaff 8!2""TT³xęé_̇@?@‡@“ŌL^iP 2Tčęx é_̇@?@‡@ęŌL^i€ Student Liaison Committee8!88,8!C1'28H3SR!",,TT‘ xĒ é_̇@?@‡@‘ ŌL^iP 7 % TgÜ  M_̇@?@‡@g8 L^idWednesday 4d,88,'8222Rp½’’’¼@Times New Roman’’’’ą•œß÷1œbø !“Ōź4älŪø ź4äšńŠßkō߁0¤&¢Ōiø ø šßņ³0G‡z €’Times ew Roman’’’’’’’Ōiø g ’’’’xąņ“0xąlNÆ0ądv% TX” ĶŪ _̇@?@‡@” L^iPth%% TÜ Üö M_̇@?@‡@Ü 8 L^id March 2009^2,,83222TT÷ Ü, M_̇@?@‡@÷ 8L^iP 6 Rpœ’’’@Times New RomanG‡z €’Times ew Romanņ/ 0pĖ®03ēņ“0ēlNÆ0(ēdv% TÄĒL– ½_̇@?@‡@ǦL^itRoom 333, WRB, 13:00C22N222_CB2222TT— LĀ ½_̇@?@‡@— ¦L^iP , % TTÆ ³ä $_̇@?@‡@Æ L^iP 6 Tx #] ”_̇@?@‡@ L^i\Minutes^88!,'TT^ #“ ”_̇@?@‡@^ L^iP 6 % TTī–_̇@?@‡@īšL^iP - TTī z_̇@?@‡@īcL^iP - % T|ī|Oķ_̇@?@‡@īŲL^i\Present:<-,',8!!TTP|†ķ_̇@?@‡@PŲL^iP 7 % TDīļī `_̇@?@‡@īI)L^i Lauren Bennie (Refinement and Rakishness)<,3!,2B,22,!C,!2,O,2,22C,2'22,''!TTļ ļ `_̇@?@‡@ļ IL^iP .
