Apologies No apologies were received. 2. Minutes from last meeting The minutes of the last committee meeting (Wednesday 22nd April 2009) were previously circulated and approved. 3. Matters Arising No matters arising were reported. 4. Pre-Honours Courses Social History 1 No representatives from Social History 1 were present at the meeting. Social History 2 Both representatives for Social History 2 reported that they had emailed all other students on the course and asked for their comments prior to the meeting, but had received no replies. One issue which was raised was the possibility of holding an exam for the course in the December diet. There was some discussion over the issues around holding exams at the end of Semester One. It was noted that this was an idea that was popular with many students, and is currently being undertaken in some Scottish History pre-honours courses. However, it was highlighted that from an administrative perspective, holding exams at this time would raise timetabling issues, given the length of time taken to produce, circulate and schedule exams. It would also be time intensive for both secretarial staff and academics, and have other implications for teaching, learning and research. Professor Richard Rodger also noted that as there was already an assessed group project for Social History 2 at the end of Semester 1, holding an exam at this time might also place more pressure on students. Dr Martin Chick also commented on the shorter time that students would have for revision at the end of Semester One given the structure of the academic year. He also noted that he felt that students performed better having had the entire year to reflect on a topic, rather than just one semester. There was also some discussion as to the use of eReserve, with students asking whether it would be possible to have more resources put on eReserve. Dr Felix Boecking, Library representative, highlighted that although eReserve was recognized as a good system, the Library had not anticipated the volume of demand and as such was now working through a backlog of requests. Professor Rodger also noted that one of the problems with eReserve was the inability to scan multiple chapters from a single book. He commented that although it was a useful tool, it should be used as a minimum provision for class reading, commenting that concentrated use of eReserve reading by students was skewing tutorial discussions. The student representatives from Social History 2 also commented on the set- up of tutorials which had been found to be very useful and well linked to the lecture programme. They also complimented the usefulness of the feedback that they had received for their essays. Economic History 2 The representative for Economic History 2 stated that he had also emailed everyone on the course for their comments, but had received no replies. One comment that had been made to him by students had been the problem accessing reading that some had experienced for the short assignment. Professor David Greasley noted that although the core readings for the assignment were either on eReserve or HUB reserve loan, the main problem had been caused by a student who took out a book from HUB for 3 days, and had resultantly faced a large fine from the library. It was suggested that the course team would speak with Margaret Forrest, the School Liaison Librarian, to see if the student could be identified and spoken to about this. The course team would also to speak to the Library about this incident so as to prevent any future recurrence. The student representative also reported positive feedback regarding the course; the 1,000 word short assignment had been found to be a different and useful assessment which had forced students to think about what they included in an assignment; the tutorials were highlighted as being good and proactive, and the feedback given to students was excellent, and noted by the representative as being the best of any course they had experienced. The great variety of lectures in the programme was also complimented. It was noted by the representative that students felt that they would benefit from seeing the marking criteria for the essays while they were undertaking their coursework. This would be given to students earlier next year. One student had also asked for a reading list for the lectures; it was noted by teaching staff that these were included in lecture handouts. Dr Nuala Zahedieh also remarked that they had now identified a recently published book which could be used in next years class to provide an overview of the course material. There was also some general discussion on the provision of course handbooks for next semester prior to the Christmas holidays. It was noted that the current Economic History 2 handbook also covered next semester, so no new handbook would be produced. As Social History 2.2 was a brand new course, this would not be available for students until the end of this semester. Dr Gayle Davis, the course organizer for Social History 2.2, did highlight that she would produce an overview with lecture lists and reading for WebCT for student use until the new handbook was ready. The Computing facilities within the Library were also discussed, with particular reference made to some of the problems that students were experiencing accessing computers at busy periods. It was commented that a vast number of students were using these for applications such as Facebook, and it was suggested that students might benefit from a ban being placed on Facebook on the Library computers. Dr Boecking noted that he would raise this as an issue at the next Library committee meeting. Dr Martin Chick then thanked everyone for their useful and helpful comments and concluded the meeting.
