Wounded returning from the front

War, Journalism and History Conference - 9 to 11 November, 2007

Remembrance weekend 2007 will see The Centre for The Study of The Two World Wars host three days of events under the title “War, Journalism and History”.

This initiative will bring together historians, war correspondents, members of the armed forces, and the public to examine and debate the media coverage of wars. On Friday 9 and Sunday 11 November, Armistice Day, the public will be invited to come along, listen to, and take part in debates about the representation of war through the media of film, photo, broadcast, and print journalism.

On Saturday 10 November, at a one day academic conference, international scholars will present papers on the works of famous World War 1 and World War 2 war correspondents.

The three day event will be complemented by an exhibition of documents and photos from the archive of the writer and war correspondent, Cornelius Ryan who wrote three acclaimed books on World War 2. The Longest Day examines the D-Day offensive, A Bridge Too Far covers the battle for Arnhem, and The Last Battle details the fall of Berlin. The books became international best sellers and two of them were turned into successful films.

Ohio University is the repository of the Cornelius Ryan Archive, and The Centre for The Study of The Two World Wars has been working with material from this extensive collection for the past two years.
